Can Claude make videos? What Claude can and can’t do with video (2026)

Claude outputs text and code, not video files. Here is what that means in practice, and how to turn Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 or Fable 5.1 into a working video director.

By Claude Video Team ·

Short answer: Claude cannot make a video file by itself. Anthropic’s Claude models (Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 4.5) produce text and code. They do not render frames, encode MP4s or generate audio. But Claude is excellent at the hardest part of making a video: deciding what the video should say and show. Give it a renderer and it becomes a very capable director.

What Claude is great at in video production

  • Research: reading your website, docs and changelog to understand what the product actually does.
  • Story: structuring a hook, problem, product, proof and call to action that fit in 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Copy: writing short, punchy on-screen lines that read in under two seconds.
  • Direction: choosing scenes, pacing, camera moves and transitions, written as a precise storyboard.
  • Code: writing animation code (for example React scenes) when a scene needs something custom.

What Claude does not do

  • It does not output video or audio files.
  • It does not draw pixels the way text-to-video models do.
  • It cannot see your final render unless a tool shows it rendered frames.

Three ways to make a video with Claude

1. Ask Claude for code and render it yourself

You can ask Claude to write animation code with a framework like Remotion or plain HTML/CSS, then render it locally. It works, but you own the setup, the debugging, the fonts, the music and the export pipeline.

2. Use Claude Video (Claude as the director, an engine as the camera)

Claude Video pairs Claude with Kinetik, a deterministic motion engine. You paste a URL; Claude researches the product and writes a storyboard; the engine renders 3D titles, product tours, particles and beat-synced music. You edit any scene by hand or in plain English, then export an MP4 in 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1, up to 4K.

3. Let Claude drive the whole thing through MCP

Add the Claude Video MCP server to Claude.ai, Claude Desktop or Claude Code. Claude gains tools to create a video, preview frames, edit the storyboard and render the final file, so you can make a video entirely in conversation.

Why not just use a text-to-video model?

Generative video models are impressive for cinematic footage, but they struggle with exactly what product videos need: readable text, your real interface and exact brand colors. Using Claude to direct a deterministic engine keeps every word crisp and every edit repeatable.

Which Claude model should you use?

Claude Opus 5.5 is the best default for launch and product films. Claude Sonnet 5.5 is faster and cheaper for ad variations and weekly release videos. Claude Fable 5.1 is worth it for complex explainers and custom scene code. Claude Haiku 4.5 handles quick edits like captions and CTA changes.
