Claude for motion design: what it can (and can’t) do in 2026

Can Claude do motion design? An honest look at where Claude helps (story, timing, typography, code) and how to turn its direction into rendered motion graphics.

By Claude Video Team ·

Motion design looks like a craft of keyframes, but most of the work happens before the first keyframe: deciding what the piece says, how it is paced, which moments deserve a flourish and which should breathe. That decision layer is exactly where Claude is strong. The execution layer (computing every frame) is where it needs help.

What Claude is genuinely good at

  • Narrative structure: a hook in the first two seconds, a clear middle, a call to action that lands.
  • On-screen copy: short lines written to be read in motion, not paragraphs.
  • Pacing: how long each beat holds, where to speed up, where to pause for a stat.
  • Art direction in words: “calm keynote, huge type, silk background” or “brutalist, hard cuts, acid colors”.
  • Code: animation logic in JavaScript or React, After Effects expressions and ExtendScript.

What Claude does not do on its own

Claude does not render frames, encode video or play audio. Ask it for “a motion graphic” in a chat and you will get a description or code, not an MP4. To get a finished piece you need a renderer that turns its direction into frames.

Three ways to get rendered motion from Claude

Code it: Claude + a code-based renderer

Claude can write scenes for a React-based renderer such as Remotion, or for HTML canvas and CSS. You get full control and own the pipeline: setup, fonts, assets, audio, rendering and debugging.

Script it: Claude + After Effects

Claude writes expressions (bounces, wiggles, counters, loops) and ExtendScript to automate repetitive comp work. You still animate in After Effects; Claude removes the tedious parts.

Direct it: Claude + Claude Video

In Claude Video, Claude writes a structured storyboard and the Kinetik engine renders it: springs, real motion blur, 3D titles, particles, physics and 21 transitions, with an original soundtrack cut to the beat. You edit by hand or by asking, then export an MP4 up to 4K.

Why the “director + engine” split works

Generative video models invent pixels, which is why text comes out garbled and UI comes out wrong. When Claude directs and a deterministic engine renders, every word is typeset, your real interface is shown and the same storyboard always produces the same film. That is what motion design for products needs.
